Startup Studios: Elevating and Educating In the New Music Industry
New York City December 10th, 2009-New independent record company based out of New York City, Startup Studios, will be releasing their first project the Absolute EP in the spring of 2010. CEO Carlos Gutierrez created the Startup imprint after his success in the new renaissance of internet and Urban music projects. Fresh from producing Sellassie's I'm Tryin' To Make a Livin' Not A Killin' (2009 West Coast HIp Hop Award for Knowledge Album of the Year) and Katlyn Swanson's Dizzy album on Affluent Records (New York City’s #1 independent Urban digital distribution company), Gutierrez is ready to create another collection of hits for his own diverse label.
Contrary to his Hip Hop roots, the Absolute EP will debut artists from all genres of music from Hip-Hop to Rock and R&B to World Music to market to the global audience. The Abolute EP will be produced entirely under the vision of Gutierrez with the label's philosophy, Socially Conscious Music and Performance, manifesting itself throughout. With a new label Carlos Gutierrez is ready to take over the urban music scene with a fresh and innovate sound. Adopting Gutierrez's unique eclectic production style the album contains an original sound by mixing hard hitting drums, soulful rhythms, and infectious melodies with samples, instrumentation, software synthesizers, and live DJing. As a self contained producer, he draws influences from Hip Hop, Soul, R&B, Reggae, Classical, and World Music. The 10-track EP will draw from all production methods armed with mastery in instruments such as bass, guitar, drums, keys, turntables, vocals, drum machines and samplers, which will be recorded at the Clive Davis Department of Recorded music at NYU where Gutierrez is studying to be an executive producer.
In the tradition of great music that has come out of the New York City, Gutierrez aspires to be the next producer to create classic records that reach out to the global market with a message. The music on Abolute has grooves and emotions that animate his artists and the audience. Gutierrez purposely uses these concepts as sources of inspiration and works only with artists who are talented in the transmission of ideas in the oral traditions. Each track has dynamic activity that creates a common ground with the audience through a shared attitude about concepts that affect rappers and singers such as such as economics, violence, family, social alienation, polarization of societal units, and cultural and social deprivation. Startup Studios will be the only label of its kind, speaking on global issues from a new Urban/World perspective.
Gutierrez's goal is to make this EP a breakthrough for each group by elevating artists from the street level to the major independent level through providing a sound production that will allow young artists to get signed. "The first step to making Startup Studios the premier startup music company to break into the international music industry is through internet distribution and grassroots promotion. We will drop as much music as possible in the next few years, and create collateral (as well as collateral from other projects) so that we can start signing the artists we promote and hiring in house talent to produce these albums. With the positive feedback from artists we are getting right now we will get them signed to their own label under the Startup Studios imprint in 2010." says Gutierrez.
In the last decade Gutierrez has had great amount of experience in making his entrepreneurial visions come true. In High School he raised enough money to start a production studio while mentoring middle school students in the Hip Hop recording arts. His form of fund raising was selling his first album The Simple Soul (2005) that featured his original sound scores and beats that would later reach the independent market and become the founding idea for Startup Studios. In 2005 Gutierrez he was noticed and was given a Certificate of Honor from the House of Representative’s Nancy Pelosi, California Public Assemblymen Mark Leno, Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom, San Francisco's District 9 supervisor Sophie Maxwell, and the San Francisco Youth Commission in recognition of his integration of Hip Hop into Bay Area inner city non-profit education programs, his tireless work to empower other young people to follow their passions, and for his strong advocacy on issues of diversity and equity. His first artist Katlyn Swanson, a Pop/R&B singer/songwriter from Chicago, Illinois is exemplary of this. Katlyn Swanson used a demo with a tracks from Startup Studios to present to New York City’s #1 independent urban digital distribution company, Affluent Records. Within three days of Affluent's CEO Oscar Sanchez hearing the tracks, she was offered a record deal. His production was also picked up during his term with the Slap Factory, an independent production company from San Francisco, where he and his associates produced conscious West Coast Rapper Sellassies' I'm Tryin' To Make a Livin' Not A Killin (2008) which sold over 3,000 units and landed him the honor of a West Coast Hip Hop Award.
The young CEO/Producer is more than confident with his place in the industry, and as Carlos Gutierrez is building his production the grassroots way, his associates are behind him. "Now I am the sole proprietor of Startup Studios projects. Meaning I produce, engineer, mix, promote and run all business aspects of the label myself. My personal goal, however, is to step further away from the mixing boards and step into the executive boards so I can begin to brand Startup Studio recording technology products. In addition I want to create a fully functioning studio/tour bus and a non-profit to teach kids in underserved communities how to be producers and young entrepreneurs. " Gutierrez explains, “I saw a lot of kids lacking education and any outlet to do what they wanted to do,” he recollects. “I had the experience of seeing people in their neighborhoods ruin their lives doing things that were self destructive. Most of my friends grew up in the grassroots hip-hop movements in California and elevated themselves to make art their careers. I wanted to give back to help others break the criteria that society holds for young people."
Gutierrez's long term dream is to expand Startup Studios recording and business profile into a conglomeration of production outlets such as studio equipped tour bus, production software, and music production and distribution technology. In addition he wants to start a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization under Startup Studios that serves as a replacement to the cut of music in education programs for inner city communities. A Startup Studios profile and a full biography on Carlos Gutierrez will be available on StartupStudiosInc.com in spring of 2010. The Absolute EP and future music projects under Startup Studios will be available for free download at the Startup Studios website and on iTunes.
